My current flat mate is moving out at the end of this month, and i've noticed over the months that she's lived here she's put a few scratches on my wooden floor, i'm not sure how the majority got there but i know that she dented my living room floor by throwing a playstation handset down in anger. Last week i told her could she be careful when she starts to move her stuff out as i don't want anymore marks on my floor. She did say sorry but i got the feeling she was pissed with me for telling her off. now just a few days later there's a big line going down her bedroom floor, which she hasn't said anything about. I get the feeling she's done it on purpose out of jealousy and because i told her off. I think i should charge her for the damage, but haven't any idea how much. any suggestions would be appreciated xx

handbags at 10 paces comes to mind!
Do you own the flat? On what terms was she renting a room? Deposit?
Can't you claim on your home insurance? Get an expert in to estimate how much it would cost to repair the floor and charge her that amount!

i do, think that's why she's getting a bit funny with me as i'm quite young. I stupidly don't have a deposit (it's a bit of a long story) but i have her passport and she's just booked a luxury holiday in turkey so i know that she'll pay me what i ask for or she won't be abe to go. LOL sorry if i sound a bitch but i'm just really upset with her, i've been so good to her doing all the cleaning and helping her out with money, and now she does this out of spite
Question Author
i don't really want to as i don't want my primums to go up. I did think about doing that, but it would mean getting the whole flat resanded as all the floor is joined togeter so i can't do just one room. i was thinking about £50 - £100, i don't know if it's far though, i just don't know what to do :-(
but do you know she did it?
Question Author
well yes, as it's just me and her that live there and they are all in her room, apart from the on that she did in the living room, which she admitted to when i confronted her about it (she had to as the marks fitted the handset exactly and i don't use the play station) I wouldn't charge her if i thought it was an accident, but i think it was. She hasn't even said anything about it, not even sorry
I wouldnt bother, more important things in life
Question Author
so she's just gonna get away with it? this is a form of bullying
how it bullying, it may have just been an accident. You seem to think she's jealous or envious. She's moving out she'll be gone soon.
Question Author
if it was an accident surly she would of said sorry? it just seems odd that a few days after i told her off about it and treated myself to a laser hair removal (which i think she wants but can't afford) this happens. I could be wrong but my friends agree with me too, in the time i have lived with her whenever something good happenes to me she'll try her best to put a downer on it or think of as many negative points about it as she can.
That is what bonds are for, really. Did you charge a refundable bond on her first rent?
Marks on a wooden/laminate floor are going to be argued as general wear and tear.
(which I think she wants but cant have) sorry but you sound very snobby to me. You are probably right that she has done it on purpose if you continue to rub her nose in your good fortune.
sorry but thats just my opinion. I agree with albags you should have had some kind of deposit. And as for keeping her passport that is against the law. Someone I know has just been done for keeping her ex boyfriends
Question Author
what's a bond? i did think about the wear and tear but it's just so unfair, the person before her didn't make any marks at all, maybe because we got on well as friends and he respected me. I just don't understand how she's doing it. there's a few really long and thin lines in the middle of her floor, how did they get there?
maybe dragging her heels
High heels, moving something heavy, cutting/scoring something like cardboard, or rumpy-pumpy.
Get carpets....

You really expect a wooden floor to never get marked? It's called wear and tear.
its wear & tear, deliberate damage would need proving. Without a deposit it could be difficult to get recompense. Best to forget it. You can easily fix it with filler & some sanding......kick yourself while you work for not covering yourself with a deposit - you'll learn !
Question Author
I'm really not forget me not. When she first moved in she didn't have a deposit as she told me that she had to lose her deposit from her previous landlord as he was stealing form her and she didn't want to give him a months notice to get it back. But she said that she would give me her passport as a deposit for a month and then pay me the deposit on her next pay day, which she didn't, and when i asked her for it three months later she said she didn't have it as she wanted to buy a car. I hardly treat myself to anything, i haven't been on holiday for 7 years, and i hardly ever buy new clothes. I got the laser hair removal as i have something wrong with my overies (which she knows about) which makes me have excess facial hair and i was getting really upset about it.
