is there a website where you can upload pictures of plants (or weeds that i think are plants) and get some helpful chap or chapess to try and identify them ?

i have some lovely looking plants in my garden, and some not so. would be nice to know what they are so that i can trim and care for them appropriately.

if you describe them I can have a go, find you a link and you can say yea or nay... also try browsing the plant catalogues thompson and morgan, hilliers and others and they will have cultivation advice

oh goodness, they would be like green and bushy, with some flowers etc.

its just that the house/garden i own was planted by the previous owners and i don;t know what everything is. in fact i have one plant this year that wasn;t there last year or the year before (at least not at about 5 foot and blinking obvious now!) i am toying with the idea it might be a weed.

lots of strong stems reaching up to about 5 feet, typical green leaves, and the top of each stem is just starting to sprout some purpole flowers. a bit like lavendar sprigs, but it aintn't lavendar (i think).

if it is this dig it out and weedkiller it to death....

crikey, no its not that, the leaves on mine are more your typical heart(ish) shape.
Mallows, and fox gloves fit height/colour but not leaf shape I would suggest getting a flower and shrub encyclopaedia from the library and then once youve worked out what things are put labels on them while you get to grips with what is there
Question Author
libraries, encyclopedias, labels, damit this gardening stuff is hard work.

thanks for your input though. if i find out what this one is i'll let you know.
Books on plants you want are easy enough to find. Books on weeds so you can identify them seem in shorter supply :-(

Changing the subject a little, a few years back I stumbled on a website where you could upload your picture and it would be analysed by the software and matched with photos of celebrities. At the time, and even now, I don't know why that technology isn't used to allow uploading of plant photos to identify them against a known plant database. I'd love to know what all the prolific growers in my garden really are.

quick look first one is wild flowers second one is garden plants
What do you expect, eh?

Weeds are just plants in the wrong place.

this site does plant identification as well happy hunting
Not quite as simple as that. "Weeds" are difficult to kill off, "plants", on the other hand, are difficult to keep alive. If it died on you, it was a valuable plant.
Gardeners question time . . . .
upload them to photobucket or similar and link it on here, someone will help, im sure.
Send a leaf to Kew Gardens identification dept, Kew, London. In a plastic sandwich bag with a spray of water in it.
