no, it has a sweet, slightly winey smell to me
Question Author
thanks, my dil wants to make champagne or wine from it
Elderflower wine is lovely.
Definitely doesn't have a fishy smell, I quite like elderflower drinks, they are quite refreshing
My housemate thinks it smells fishy, I love the smell, but then she gets a distorted smell from a number of flowers especially stargazer lilies, hyacinths and narcissi My sister is the same, I wonder if there is a genetic link to how things smell to us. certainly elderflower seems to get the winey, or fishy options from different people.

I have to wait for the berries as I make elderberry syrup it is really soothing for coughs and sore throats.

thanks for your replies
think she wasn't sure that the sample she had was elderflower
it apparantly smely of fish so wanted to check
cheers!!
that's funny rowan witch, stargazer lilies smell sickly to me, a mixture of cheap perfume and germoline. Hyacinths start to smell the same to me as they fade but i don't get fish from elderflower. I don't like the smell of scented orchids or cyclamen either
I hate the smell of hyacinths and jasmine. Strange how different smells affect different people
love jasmine...does anyone else think that wild honeysuckle smells different from the garden kind? to me the wild one is distinctly nutmeggy.
