These last few years slugs have been infesting our guest-bedroom, i rarely see a few but it seems I wake up every morning only to see their slime-tracks all over the carpet. Are there good slug traps anyone could recommend or a way to permanently irradiate the problem?

saucers of beer? Basically what is attracting them in there? the environment must be damp and there must be a source of food (usually composting vegetation including wood) get rid of the attractants and the problem should solve itself.
Two things might help while you are resolving the problem damp or whatever Lay a trail of salt alround the rooms perimeter and anywhere else they might be coming in. at least they will die around the edges rather than trailing on your carpet, or if they seem to be coming from one spot try adhesive copper tape you can get it from some garden centres or from dolls house websites (its used for dollshouse lighting systems) it works if you put it round plant pots so would probably work round a door/window frame
Thay are most likely to be getting in under a gap in the skirting board. Find where the trails come and go and use silicon or bath sealant to fill the gaps. This worked for me.
Time to relate my favourite slug-related tale.
A few years ago my sister had problems with slugs in her kitchen which had a quarry-tiled floor. One night she came downstairs to get one of the kids a drink and reluctantly opened the kitchen door to see...
...a slug in the middle of the room trying to shake off a sugarpuff which was stuck to it's head!
