My best friend and I live in a 2 bed flat in a new build development. My friend owns the flat.

the problem we are having is that access to the electricity meters is controlled by the development company, they have a key to the cellar where all of the meters are kept. This means that we have to therefore ask them to let us in - currently only available 9 - 5 mon - fri. This is very inconvenient as both of us work full time.

The comprimise is that they read the meter and leave a message on our answer machine - which brings up questions of accuracy.

Is this right that we are denied our own access to our own electricity meter? their excuse is health and safety because it is in a cellar but i think it seems rediculous that we have to arrange for them to read it, they forget, we have to remind them... a week later still waiting... when if we had a key, 5 minutes!

Why don't you get them to fit a Key Safe by the cellar door...They could then give all the residents the Safe code....Thereby allowing all those concerned to access the cellar whenever need be...once they have finished they can return the key to the key safe, ready for the next user.
Suggest this to them saying that it will keep the residents off their backs

Anything for an easy life...!
