Electric shower head

My electric shower head seems to have built up with some kind of dark crunchy stuff around the holes (probably limescale or something)

The spouts are like little rubber things that come out of holes and the dark stuff has accumulated around the outside of the holes.

What is the best way / product to clean this with or stop it recurring?

we live in a hard water area and this occurs regularly.
as well as the cleaning suggestion we take a pin or needle and clean each hole out with a poke around.its not as time consuming as you would imagine and after this treatment it feels like a new shower when in use
Just soak the wee devil in an acid solution (vinegar, lemon juice etc) - this will react with the *crunchy stuff* which is simply limescale from the (hard) water in your area. The acid will react with the alkaline limescale and dissolve it but you may need to experiment on times and concentrations. I live in a fairly soft water environment and only have to soak my shower head once a year but mates who live in Bath and Sussex (hard water) have to do this once a month and they leave the shower head in the acid (vinegar - any sort - is the cheapest) bath overnight.
I thought these type off rubber nozzled were supposed to be self cleaning ie rub the nozzlies with the thumb when the shower is on.
Otherwise clean head with a lime descaler.
Rayman is correct in what he says.
