Really peed off since giving up smoking Oct 2006, being celebate more months and dieting to remove the weight since quitting smoking. It seems i cannot even enjoy a glass or two of wine now. Every time I have couple of drinks I end up with heart palpatations, the trots, a minging headache and all round unwellness for hours. Does anyone else experience these sort of symptoms? Thinking of becoming a buddist monkette !

My mum has just started having the same symptoms!

It started when she went for a christmas do, happened again on christmas day and also last week when she went to the pub for lunch. The only thing that was constant on all three occasions was that she had drunk a couple of glasses of wine. It never used to happen but the last three occasions she has felt so rotten she's giving up drinking!

well thank you for that I appreciate knowing Im not the only one out there. Most of my friends and family think its all a bit of a laugh but then they havent been with me at 5am when Im at my worse after drinking. Just in case it matters or is relevant, the last incident happened after drinking two glasses of Blossom Hill Merlot last weekend at a wedding reception.

I was really ill all night and couldnt get out of bed until 2pm the next day due to massive headache.

red wine can give me headaches (the cheaper the wine the worse it is); but I have no trouble with white. Have you tried switching?
When I was in my teens I could drink for England, but having the children somehow put paid to that. I seem to remember having the same sort of feelings as you're having now, but put it down to withdrawal symptoms! As the others've said though, it may just be that you have an intolerance to red wine - it can just happen.

I think the nasty affects are slightly lessened if a drink lager, not sure about white wine coz not actually drunk this recently. May give this a try, thank you. Suppose I could do a contolled lab test every other week, tryn different types of booze.

My so called friend said I ought to just shoot myself after giving up every pleasurable activity.
Awww...bless. You don't have to drink and/or smoke to enjoy yourself hun - but your breath'll smell nicer without it - xx
looks like you are just not used to drinking alcohol.

Try having a white wine spritzer. A bit of alcohol, but watered down!
Hi Petal - and yes, that's a good idea. x

Are you saying you've got to be drunk to have sex? How odd.

Alcohol is a poison which you react to badly because your liver isn't able to process it properly. Your feeling ill is an early warning sign.

It would be sensible to take notice.

celibacy is a life style choice which was easy to give up its the fact i cant seem to enjoy a glass of my favorite tipple anymore. glass of red.

i have never been a heavy or binge drinker

but yes i will take heed and give up if there is no solution
I drank red wine every day, but I was never, ever drunk, hung over or suffered any bad side effects whatsover.

A routine blood test showed I had damaged my liver - I haven't drunk alcohol since. Thankfully my liver is now perky, but I can't drink again. So I do know how you feel.
