a metal table and chairs we have on our roof terrace has gone rusty - what can we do/use to erradicate the rust?

Wire brush the whole of the metal parts to remove any loose rust and metal. Apply a coat of Trustan 40 or similar product.This is an acid based product so follow instructions on bottle that kills the rust and turns the rust black. Then give a coat of metal paint such as Hammerite.
The handiest way, though more expensive, is to have the items shotblasted. You can and should paint them directly afterwards.
