Hello a-bankers

A while ago I asked for people's experiences about different types of mattress toppers and duvets and had a fantastic response.

So here I am again, this time asking about the best quality mattress that people have found and where...

It is for a wooden slatted French style KS bed.

I don't want to compromise on cost or quality as I love my bed and sleep! Am already getting a down topper and down duvet so it would be a shame to 'spoil the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar' (I think the expression is!).

All suggestions gratefully received!

Festive Cheer!

Crazy you should post this cos I bought a memory foam topper today!! Its ace, first thing i did was get into bed and I fell straight to sleep!! In fact i cant wait to get into it again tonight!!
Always fancied one of those sheep skin mattress covers, what do you think to them?? Could i put one over my memory foam with it still being as affective?

I think you could be gilding the lily somewhat with both!

See how you get on with the memory foam first...

We've got an orthopaedic mattress which is great, but it might not suit everyone.

Thanks spudqueen!

Is it a memory foam type?

And if so, do these work OK on slatted beds?

Thanks

H
It really depends on what type of mattress you like and how firm you want it to be and feel. It is possible to have a firm supporting mattress but with a soft or hard feel, and the same for a more yeilding mattress. What you need depends on your personal preference, and your build (weight) etc.

I personally like a firm mattress with a firm feel and don't like memory foam as it doesn't give me that "brick like" feel that I prefer, but others think it is the best thing since sliced bread. There is no option other than to go to a shop and try out some mattresses until you find what suits. By all means, try to buy the same one on the internet if you prefer, but you need to try it out first.

I have a cumflux orthapedic mattress which is very firm.
a wterbed in th US, but I believe they give back trouble if used over a long period of time/
sorry I meant to type WATERBED.

I don't think you can use a waterbed mattress on a slatted bed, can you?

Not sure that would be for me anyway.

I'd like something soft, indulgent yet supportive.

I want to fell like I'm sleeping on a cloud.

Not much to ask, surely?!

Thanks for all replies so far.

Keep them coming...

"By all means, try to buy the same one on the internet if you prefer, but you need to try it out first."

Good point, annie, thank you.
We have one of these mattresses. http://www.ergoflex.co.uk/ - they occasionally list them on EBay but it is the comfiest thing I've ever slept on!! They are fine on a slatted base, but they recommend you purchase a piece of pegboard to cover the slats (costs about 10 from your local timber merchants). This extends the life of the mattress. They do pong a bit for the first few weeks though...
I have a 1,000 Harrison superking ( can split into two single beds), but it is a 'all in one divan' as apposed to a mattress, but Harrison is one of the best makes in the bed world. Always try the bed in store before you buy it and try and find a wooden slatted underneath so you will know what it will feel like at home.
I've travelled all over the world and tried some of the best mattresses (five star hotels, thanks to work!) and when I find a really comfy one I pull up the sheets and have a quick look at the brand. I've had good nights' sleep on Tempur memory foam beds but find they can get a bit hot and sticky in warmer weather. Just before I bought my new mattress earlier this year I stayed over at a friend's house - and bought a Silentnight mattress on the basis of this. Unbelievable - certainly not the most expensive mattress I've ever slept on - but wonderfully comfy - not too soft or hard. It's a Clevedon Miracoil tufted - just around 200. They also usually come up inthe Argos sales so might be even cheaper after Christmas. At this price, if you aren't happy, you can always shift it into the guest room! Happy sleeping!
