Citrinella.
(spelt wrong)
you can get candles i think that they don't like and they go away.
Thanks Crossroads,
I will try anything that will keep them out of this house.
Citronella shouldnt be used indoors tho (as far as Im aware) theyre for keeping wasps off the barbecue etc, theyre too stong for indoor use, the vapours would also keep YOU out ... lol.
Ive tried the plug in things and they dont work.

I will have nightmares now after reading all this haha
Last night I got up off the sofa where I'd happily been sitting with my laptop & watching the tv, as I was turning to leave the room, I saw a huge one running on the sofa where I'd been sitting, urrrgh. I am sitting on the sofa today, knowing it is probably hiding underneath & that I will defo drop my laptop on the floor if it suddenly jumps out on me!
Get an old lady, then ask her to swallow a fly...you know the rest :-)
As a pest controller for 13 years and heard every trick in the book, I can promise you that you will never stop spiders coming into your house.

As for those sonic deterrents I wouldn't buy one if they were 10p each, they don't work and never have worked, they are also available for rodents, they work for about 2 weeks and then the problem starts all over again, don't waste your money!!
i was talking to one of my neighbours today who invested in one of those sonic repellents. She swore blind it was the best 15 shes ever spent! she said she still gets the odd "tarantula" running across the floor but nowhere near as many as she had before she bought one. She bought hers from Maplins electronics. Just thought id let you know! lol
I have taught myself over many years to control my 'spider phobia'. I am now able to live with them, and like Boo and others think they are a welcome addition to any home.

Anything that keeps those horrible dirty and disease ridden flies away is fine by me.

I still can't pick them up though, unless they are under half an inch long!!!
Just read this thread with interest as I hate spiders too.
And to this end I have set up my own website especially to show people ways to prevent spiders in your home and to deal with them if they ever do get past your defenses.
The website is www.spiderpanic.com
I have also written a special ebook that you can purchase on spider prevention at www.spiderpanic.com/prevention.
There are lots of ways to stop these nasties getting near you. Check it out now and all the best.
Okay I hated spiders most of my life, but when my son grew up I realised the hate was being transferred and it was becoming a night mare. I used to kill them, many because it was a you or me scenario, because the fear would just freeze me to the spot. I still dislike them but i have two guys in my house who hates them, my husband also. I hate to kill anything except flies, there lies my sadistic nature...I get pleasure at chasing them around the room and squatting them...sorry.

As for spiders coming in the house, it's a total invasion of privacy, and this year they are beasts! With my two guys bouncing about like they have entered a ballet competition, it's left for me to deal with them. So over goes the wine goblet, the big one which only just gets the legs all in. Long handle see as not to be anywhere near, paper slipped between as card too think, hand over top and disposed of not just outside..but tens of yards away from the house....Now, you would think they get the message! Nope, across the road, around or over the house and back where they have been living...I swear, it's the same spider, 3 times in last week has broken and entered house, big momma. I was on the phone and my lads were squealing from the other room and lo and behold, there she was again. So I took her out and yards away put her on the verge, and she's back I actually saw her arrive in the hour and half I was yabbing to my sister.

Whilst looking to see what is causing this, I came across this site. All windows shut now, but a damn male ran across my desk! Oh I give up..and the lavender doesn't work either, I have a whole shoe box next to me of flowers that I picked yesterday for bags, and it's over whelmingly pungent in here.

Guess I am just going to have to put up with them, as they don't hurt you, just scare the wits out of you. Remember they are tiny compared to you. In Sympathy...
I found this page doing a google search about stopping spiders coming into house http://www.pestcontrolshop.co.uk/acatalog/no_m ore_spiders.html
If anyone finds anything better pls let me know as we get about 4 BIG ones every day in different rooms.
The greatest invention of all time for arachnophobes is the spidatrap. It has completely changed my live and thousands of others. If you put 'the answerbank' under your name when ordering, I'll throw in 2 extra traps FREE.
I've got an ultrasonic spider repeller and it's been working really well! I don't know if it's because technology has improved over the last few years (all the studies saying that this kind of thing doesn't work were all carried out in the 90's) but I can certainly vouch for them!
a bowl full of conkers here and there are supposed to work - i only managed to get one bowl full and have to say where it is there appears to be no spiders.......yet! unfortunately they are seasonal. For those that dont mind killing them.... (sorry to those that do) I used to vacuum them up and then stick a sock over the nozzle, in case they crawled back out. then someone told me if you have dust in the hoover already, they will die as the dust suffocates them (doesnt work with beetles!) So I'm afraid my 8 legged visitors go up the pipe, if there is no-one else there to get them out for me.
