A friend of mine recently moved in to quite an old rented house, and there are a few slugs coming in to the kitchen downstairs. Are there any simple ways to deter them? I think she would rather not go down the chemicaly route if possible.

Make some beer traps. Sink a couple of old yogurt pots (or similar) into a flower bed near where the slugs hang out and fill them with beer. The slugs are attracted to the beer, they then fall in and drown! No need to waste good beer - I get some in an old plastic milk bottle from the drip trays at my local.
keep a pet frog
take their back door key off them!
i have heard that copper deters them so a thin copper wire discreatly across their path would do the job.
