Its actually easier to clean an iron when it's cold, I use cif cream cleanser and a sponge with scourer at the other end, clean it thoroughly with the scourer, till all marks are gone, then use a damp cloth to wipe away all the cream and dry off with a clean, dry cloth, before heating up, of course there are proprietary iron cleaners, but cost a bit, this is easier and costs little.
If it's too difficult to do just using scouring powder etc., use an orbital sander with fine paper first then finish it with a fine scouring powder. I have done this several times with the same iron and it is excellent and very smooth afterwards. Make sure that whatever method you use, you steam iron some waste material afterwards to dispose of any residue from the cleaning process.
slightly warm iron use liquid soap on cloth.
