I have a gas fire in the lounge which normally ignites when you push down and twist a knob on the top. this has now stopped working, there is no click as the gas ignites. I would be grateful for any ideas on what might be wrong with it

You may see a piece of wire that the spark jumps from to earth. There should be a gap, has this got knocked and closed up to much.? . Also try cleaning it with a bit of emery board.
Are you able to get the pilot light going with a gas lighter ?
A safety feature on some gas fires needs the pilot light to run before gas comes through at all.
