I am fitting a new kitchen which is below the childrens bedroom. While I am at it I want to soundproof the room so that parties in the kitchen don't disturb the kids! Is there something available other than just overboarding with plasterboard?

You can get special high density plasterboard that'll deaden the sound & either lift the floor boards above or [if you're putting in a new ceiling] in the spaces between joists put sound deadening insulation. I'd do a double layer on the ceiling, staggering the joints, so that they overlap. I'm not being sarky, but wouldn't it be cheaper to move the children to another bedroom - if only for that night?
I put down a good Quality carpet and two layers of underlay. Didn't cut out sound completely, but it did cut it down alot.
Theres also a soundproofing filler you can get for the joints between the plasterboard and wall edges. Ask in your local B & Q. I used it in New Zealand ,so I'm not sure about availability over here I'm afraid.
