over a period of time, my dishwasher has been leaving a dirty scummy circle around the outside of my glasses and a pint glass is totally smeared now, looking cloudy all over. we use 4 in 1 tablets and i even ran dishwasher cleaner through the machine last week. i have tried rubbing it with the rough part of a sponge cleaner but it doesnt do much. any ideas welcome.

In simple terms...you can`t. I`m not sure what the process is that causes it (no doubt someone on here will tell you!) but there`s no way to remove it as it seems to be etched in to the glass. As someone pointed out to me, it is a DISHwasher, so perhaps best to leave the glasses out. For every day, and hence in the dishwasher, we use cheap and cheerful pint glasses, tumblers etc from Tesco and when they are clouded, recycle them and start again! NEVER put cut glass in the dishwasher under any circumstances.
The alkali nature of the dishwasher powder/tablet gradually attacks the smooth surface of glass and creates the etched appearance.
Do you have salt in the machine ?

Are you certain the glasses are dishwasher proof ?

What geographic are do you live in ?

Glasses can be washed very succesfully in dishwashers ... you think pubs & restaurants wash all theirs by hand ?
We have a dishawasher and it has various settings, I only ever wash glasses on the hottest wash and put them in with good 3 or 4 in 1 tablets and always leave them in to dry in the heat, only when we use a quick wash or use cheap tablets do we get marks on the glasses, a good glass cloth or tea towel will normally wipe them clean if so
