Probably. It would be true. I doubt if it'd add value or interest though.

That's what exposed beams are, joists that hold the floor up.

I don't see why people get so excited about them

I think they are awful, wouldn't entertain them. And they could be a serious fire hazard if the upper floor is not well protected.

They look good in genuinely older properties as part of the design.

When I had a kitchen extension added to my first house the builder said he'd make the beams exposed and it'd look great. On completion I checked things over, he had obviously forgotten ! I didn't think it was worth bringing up.

I consider that beams are large timbers which support smaller joists which support the upstairs floorboards. Exposed 8 by 2 joists would in my view not be visually attractive. There would be more chance of noise coming through  from upstairs. Is your house very old?

You can, but I wouldn't bother. Extra surfaces to dust and cobweb.

I think it depends largely on if you call a room a 'space', 'bring the outdoors indoors' and hve 'those views'.

Let's ask two local estate agents who aren't telegenic.

A friend of mine lived in a barn conversion. She got so fed up with the spiders and the dust that her husband fitted a false ceiling in all the upstairs rooms.

That's why I would never want a barn conversion or a home with those high vaulted ceilings that everyone raves about on property programmes. Who wants to see an unreachable big housespider 20 feet above their bed. Ugh.

I think the Homes under the Hammer crew are daft. Who really wants their kitchen in the living room & 12ft high ceilings? 🤣

Not be, davebro.

I have fire retardant insulation hidden between my joists. Acts as sound proofing as well as keeping the heat in the room

'twas the spiders above the bed that did it for her, Prudie and the heat in the summer, the cold in the winter. It was much more habitable once the ceilings had been fitted.

Question Author

Ceilings became popular for a very good reason

That's why you get a four poster bed, Prudie. Draw the velvet drapes around and stay cosy inside.

To answer your question Barry:

Possibly... but only if you can rightfully claim that the uncovered plumbing/electrical cables/waste pipes/crisp packets/ copies of 'The Sun'..............  are also original  🤣
