As some of you know, when my husband was with me, we had no option but to have single beds. Space being limited our twin beds were each side of the room. I hated facing the wall but, I'm now able to arrange a bigger bed as I'm sure my large body is going to end up on the floor now my single bed is more central in the room..

I need a bigger bed. I'm wondering about a 4ft bed as opposed to a double, 4'6".

The twin beds are memory foam and very comfy. My previous double was a gel & sprung mattress with firm sides.

Does anyone have a preference on a comfortable mattress.

I can't get to a store to test them. Any suggestions?

You really need to test it beforehand as people have different preferences.
Some people prefer softer mattresses .... others prefer a more firm mattress.
No advice on mattresses, but bear in mind that finding fitted sheets...if that's what you prefer...for a 4 foot mattress may be difficult.
I would get a double for the simple reason it's easier to get fitted sheets etc. than a 4 ft one. Get a one with a pillow top, but if possible, go to a shop and try out various types before you buy. I have to say, Hypnos mattresses are the best I've ever slept on.

my daughter (10) has a small double 4ft and ive never found it a problem getting sheets. It has an ordinary double duvet
a lot of mattress makers allow you to try them at home - for 200 nights in the case of Emma

I was going to suggest the Emma Mattress also - because you can return them after 200 days, I'd go with the 4"6 bed frame TOB - my own mattress is open coil and gives great support. I'm not too fond of the memory foam mattress

Thanks for advice / suggestions.

I thought a 4ft would give me a bit more space in the bedroom, easier to clean exactly.

Not nessesary, but I'm unable to get out often..

I'll sort it in a few days.. . Many thanks xx
when I bought my bed and mattress TOB, I was housebound and my firend brought me over to the furniture store in her car but then the beds were upstairs (no lift/escalator) so, because she knew me so well and what I liked, she lay on all the mattresses and beds like a little goldilocks and bought the one she thought I would be happy with, great choice and I am still snug in it so if you could get someone close to you to maybe try out beds, take photos and send them to you and choose on your behalf, that might be a good idea. I know it's hard when you cannot really get out and go for the bed that's best suited for you if it is the 4"

I am being taken to town for an eye test tomorrow, I hope to get as far as a bed store while were out.. I'll be glad of a lay down by then..maybe a proper snooze lol

I have tried loads of beds and bought quite a number of them over the years - it really does depend on what you like - you do need to lie on them Old bird.

I had a bad back when I bought my first bed and was told orthopaedic - I will never forget the hardness and swore never again. I bought another (maybe spring coil) and at the time it seemed ok but again - far too hard.

I got a soft mattress in Dreams about two years ago (bed actually) and it is hard enough for me. But I do believe if you have megabucks Dunlopillo is a lovely mattress. We had one in my last family home (double) - mother, my sister and I slept on it together for years - the best ever apart from the squashness LOL
I understand why you want a 4' bed TOB as I'm the same and would rather have a few more inches of bedroom rather than bed. I don't see any reason at all why you shouldn't go for that. Good luck whatever you decide.
My cousin has a 4' bed all her life and I never heard her complaining about bed clothes
Dunelm sell fitted sheets in all the colours for a 4' bed, which they call a small double.
A standard double duvet would be fine on a 4' bed as would double flat sheets.
