My wife usually reads gritty crime fiction, police procedurals and thrillers but fancies a change.

She particularly enjoys reading series set in the UK so is looking for a contemporary saga, I suppose you'd call them, that she can get immersed in.

Any suggestions?

Not contemporary but how about the Poldark books, by Winston Graham. I don't read fiction but have been told they are good.
The Cazalet chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard. Five book series set from 1937 up until the start of WW11.
I'm a crime novel junkie but like to vary my reading from time to time and I enjoyed this very much.

Thanks for the suggestions :)
could she get her head round sci fi fantasy, or is that a step too far.
as Stephen Donaldson writes brilliantly, the Thomas Covenant series are amazing, and takes an age to read because they are long stories.
Not contemporary, but I would recommend Pillars of the Earth, to anyone.

She can't be doing with sci-fi/fantasy, nor anything with names she can't pronounce :D
She doesn't enjoy historical fiction, either.
I'd also recommend the Poldark books and the Cazalet saga, though they aren't contemporary. And what about RF Delderfield's books? They generally begin in the early 20th century (though the Swann books start in the 19th) and move forward in time. Sadly, Delderfeld died before he could complete the Swann series, but the three extant books, beginning with "God is an Englishman," are very absorbing -- and informative.
If she’s ready to go back to the gritty crime, try the blue Monday series by Nikki French. Mostly set in London, I think it’s a series of 7 books
