I've just been reading in the Mail on Sunday, that the chief of Debenhams says unless the government slash their taxes, some of their flag ship stores may close, along with other smaller ones. Firstly who will really miss their inflated prices, may be some of these big knobs within this company should be thinned out, and certainly their massive salary reduced before any such tax hand out,. Most if not all shop floor staff are park time/ zero contract hours, certainly not over paid.
Its not the present pandemic that's put Debenhams in the position it is in today, although its what they want the government to believe, its just bad management, no smaller business would get support for sheer neglect and poor performance.

I walked through Debenhams yesterday, and do most weeks, and by what I see there is no attempt whatsoever to move with the times. The shop is bursting at the seams with expensive sock, and very high prices, and empty of customers, the perfume counters, like always are deserted, again due to expensive products that can be bought in the same centre for almost half the price of Debenhams. So why should they be demanding a tax handout?

There are some businesses that are trying to take advantage of the Coronavirus situation.
Debenhams has been in decline for years, for precisely the reasons you describe.

Well they've been threatening to shut up shop for months now, in a bid to extract funds from the government, and even if that came about, they would in my view still be threatening to close this time next year.
Let me get this right, a man who calls himself Teacake and who wanders through Debenhams on a Saturday
Righty-o ;0)))))))
Don't think the extortionate Rents are helping either, Teacake.
15.48 ,Bit early isn't it.
Arh, you copied and pasted that from Sparklykid morning thread, bless you gully
Oh hang on, does this mean you really can c&p after all ?? Haha
Eye watering business rates are sounding the death knell for high streets too, Debenhams Oxford St store attracts a £5.5 Million pound bill alone.
Some business experts claim 200 of the 300 businesses on Oxford St could go soon.
You've wandered off topic Bobbi.
Yes, Debenhams has been on its way out for years. Last time I went in was a couple of years ago to use the loo. There were awful clothes and just a few people milling around.
Oh , I'm so sorry Mamya , hangs head in shame

15.48, if you have nothing to offer the thread, may be a glide through the corn field with your hair net and doggy bag.

I'm no expert on Debenhams, have on;y been in the Manchester store once and of course they may be outmoded, it is however sad the think of some of the wonderful high streets up and down the country losing shops .

I know tradition in spending habits change, but it's still disappointing.
I pass through our Debenhams sometimes...always entering by the makeup and perfume counters. There will always be at least 6 staff standing around, talking. Are so many necessary? Are they paid by Debenhams, or by the makeup franchise that I think may hire space?
It's not a good look to have staff doing nothing.
They get paid by the make up franchise who've hired space in the store Pasta
Your remark about franchises was not there when I started typing Bobbi.
