What type? treat the underlying problem usually damp soil and most just die. Bracken the big tough stuff needs brush killer on new growth

I don't know what type they are, they have spread from around the pond and now some have taken root under the garage wall, where I cannot get at them to dig them out.

Ferns like cool, damp and shady areas and it sounds like they have found the perfect place next to your garage.
They spread from spores on the under sides of the fronds, therefore I would get in there with a strong pair of gloves to pull them out.
