I have a wash basin where the plug is the type which is depressed to close then depressed again to release. It has stuck closed leaving me with a basin of dirty water. Any plumbers on this site who can give me tips on how to fix this or do I need a plumber? (which will take days)

Hope this helps:
Have you tried turning it? We had one of these and it unscrewed for cleaning. If you can get purchase on it, that might work.
Well Sandmaster, I think I would just give it a good thump with my fist. There isn't much in the mechanism to make it really solid.

Failing that.... unscrew the trap under the basin, to release the water.
You'll need a bowl to collect it though.

Thanks everyone. Apologies for taking so long to acknowledge you all but circumstances prevented me. However, I used a small rubber sucker (supplied with G10 light bulbs) to get a purchase and turned the plug. Up it popped. I haven't chosen a best answer because you were all good!!
