It is probably a Cordyline, or Australian palm tree. I have three of these trees, and the brown spears drop off all the time. My gardener chap cuts them off at the trunk when they are ready to drop.

I'm thinking of a number. Can anyone tell me what it is ?

I reckon you would benefit from getting someone local to run through doing pictures with you. It would help.

When they get to below the horizontal just cut them off. Don't cut them too close to the trunk. It helps to make the trunk thicker.
Is it a Yucca.? I just cut the brown fronds off
When I put my yukka outside the winter just killed it :-(

cordyline australis
MallyH i have one in my garden almost 15 year old.
The brown leafs can be pulled off prior to them falling off, this won't damage the tree and if anything will benefit it.
Question Author
I googled cordyline australis and clicked on images it's the first picture
Smell lovely when they flower.
