Carl wants to install new flooring in his hallway and kitchen. He does not need new flooring in the stove, counter, or sink areas. How many square feet of flooring will he need to purchase?

Cut it up into rectangles, calculate them one by one, add them up and take away the triangle.
They sell it in square metres now......
Is it still sold in square feet? Is there a pattern?
Is this linked to a game?
Think it's linked to homework FF ;))
Area of kitchen = 20' x 20' = 400 sq ft.

Area of stove + counter = 4' x (20' - 8') = 4' x 12' = 48sq ft.

Area of sink = ½(6' x 6')= 18 sq ft

Area of flooring required in kitchen = 400 sq ft - (48 sq ft + 18 sq ft) = 400 sq ft - 66 sq ft = 334 sq ft.

Area of flooring required in hallway = 4' x 14' = 56'

Total area required = 334 sq ft + 56 sq ft = 390 sq ft.
Depends on the need to allow for matching pattern, could be more than the minimum amount
The real life answer though is "it depends"
Carl doesn’t give a stuff about patterns, Rowan. Mrs Carl might, of course.
Is it lino or tiles?
Might be laminate!
How much wastage is advised with the particular "floor covering"? Laminate flooring can generate 15% wastage as can large ceramic tiles. Mosaic tiles, whilst being less wasteful do tend to waste a lot of time. Is the floor covering going to be "thick"? If so it could well impede easy opening of the Oven door or fridge/freezer. Is the flooring waterproof? If not it may not be the best resolution for a sink area and is therefor probably best left out of your order altogether. Now that looks like a long but narrow hall. You really need to consider the aesthetics when flooring such a narrow but long space or you may find yourselves somewhat disconcerted on entry after a night out that was "more than expected" The wrong surface may induce a condition that requires a vomit friendly covering, which again is best calculated after calculating the likely amount of vomit. Do not under any circumstance fit carpet tiles in the misguided belief that an unforeseen accident on one of them is easily remedied by simple replacement. Why does Carl feel that it is necessary to replace the existing flooring anyway? Is he/she thinking of selling on pdq?
I'm pretty sure that this is some time of homework question so the type of flooring is not important. The student merely has to calculate the area to be covered in the diagram keeping in mind the area not to be covered.
It does help if the context of the question is given.
It also helps if you look at the very clever , and very new op profile. Not a newbie. Juju man is still out there. Haha.
FF, to me it sort of reads like a homework question including the introduction "Carl wants to install..." not "I" or "My wife". It just sounds like a "generic" type of school question.
And, for some reason, I think it's an American poster; however, I could be wrong on one (or both assumptions).
Sanmac…….do you believe that "homework" questions are still asked in feet and inches? Or that the names used are of English or Nordic origin? The name Carl is far too white privilege.
Shot FF.
