I think you can get an alarm system that goes off when doors are opened but not triggered by movement (of togs or people) inside.

if you have a pooch you are pretty unlikely to get visited.
we dont set the alarm when the dogs are inside
Yes...my cats used to set my alarm off, so did they kids getting up in the morning. Not a nice way to wake up. We had to have a sensor in an upstairs room because that's where our office was.
We have an intruder alarm. We can switch some detectors off, whilst leaving others on. If you don't want your dog to set the alarm off, put it in a room in which the detector is switched off. As regards your husband working shifts, you can set the alarm as normal when you go to bed. When your husband comes home, he will probably trigger the alarm's warning sound when he comes in at the front door. He will have about 30 seconds to get to the keypad and turn the alarm off. When he has done that, the alarm will be unset (i.e. not likely to go off) until he does what you did when you went to bed.
Chose an alarm company and ask their advice re type of indoor sensors so pet do not set it off. We have panic button in each bedroom and two motion detectors but do not have pets. My daughter has pets and her sensors are shoulder high and the animals do not set them off
I have alarm system, but best deterent are the 2 dogs next door, a pair of south african ridgebacks, soft things, but bark would put any intruder of
A proper alarm system can be set in various ways - Ours has 2 settings - at night, everyone is upstairs so we keep the downstairs and garage kept on up and the upstairs detectors omitted from that setting with the kitchen detector switched off on all settings due to the dog - it is possible to get detectors that can be set for animals depending on the size and climbing abilities (cats). The other setting is for everyone out and dog in kitchen.
