Geraniums
I agree - hardy geraniums are fantastic - grow anywhere and are trouble-free. Lots of different ones in shades of pink and lilac.
The first thing to spring to my mind was 'Heuchera' or perhaps Hellibor's if the soil is alcoline.
Heuchera and hellebores will grow in any soil.
How about some colorful Primula's, Cyclamem or Tiarella ?
Epimediums, ferns, heucheras and heucherellas, small variegated ivies, pulmonarias especially the very silvery ones and spring and autumn flowering bulbs and corms.
I love Epimediums!
Erythroniums are lovely too and well worth waiting for, to come up.
