I got home from work yesterday to find a jackdaw in my conservatory. That's the 4th one in about 3 months that's come down the chimney. Who do you call to fit one of those things - a sweep or a builder?

I'd say a builder or roofer to put a cap on the chimney.
A cowl?

Builder or send him up a ladder.
Fitted mine myself. Nay took a couple of weeks to stop my knees shaking. Hate ladders. I’d love a Jackdaw as a pet. V intelligent. Which is ironic.

This may be a silly question but can you put it up the chimney or does it have to be done from the roof? Ours is very high pitched and thatched, will be a major faff for someone to get up there.
I don't think you can just shove it up the chimney, Prudie. :-)

Get a man in.
Do you have a small Victorian child handy?

Reported.

Sexist.

Unfortunately not ZM, that would be the ideal solution.
Maybe a Lithuanian?
We had a bird guard fitted - by a sweep - to our chimney. It's a kind of drum-shaped cage, with a flat top, and it's fastened to the chimney pot by a steel band (on the outside of the chimney, by the way).
Question Author
Aren't most Lithuanians too fat to go up a chimney?
Yes but they’d stop the birds coming down.
Question Author
Hadn't thought of that - shove one up and leave him there :-)
On a serious note I keep telling the OH we have to sort it. They are stunning birds (although they have that touch of folky sinister air) but I have 2 cats, the 3rd one that came down was sadly dead on the floor. I felt awful about it.
Talbot, are you going to report Prudie for her fat Lithuanians comment?
Yes they do have a cocky ‘I know what you’re thinking’ attitude don’t they. You can train them to do all sorts of things.
Question Author
Tilly someone will probably :-)

Already have.
A cowl - takes two minutes to fit - you just need someone who is happy going up a long ladder......

The ones we use for wood burning fires (mainly) are like this https://stovesareus.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/decorative_bird_guard.jpg

Inside a purple note the cowl should be plus the fitting cost.

/// you just need someone who is happy going up a long ladder ///

That's a job I'm going to have to turn down then.
Assuming you don't use the chimney...what are you like with a frisby?
