The "Dummies" books are usually quite good for beginners

To do what? grow veg? greenhouse? trees and shrubs? design? Its a mega subject. If its not for a gift, I would say that the internet is your friend rather than a book. For a gift, I would suggest Monty Don's Down to Earth. Its a good mixture of wisdom and entertainment and an easy read with loads of photographs
Alan Titchmarsh "How to be a Gardener" is good for basics.

Woof just for a bog standard lawn with borders, hanging baskets, trees and shrubs, no veg or greenhouse. First house. Thanks.
Do you already have a garden or are you starting from scratch?
If there is already a garden established, probably the best thing (apart from routine maintenance eg cut the grass) is live with it for a year. That way you get to see what it looks like in all seasons and what planting has been done. (You also get to see which aspects are sunny, and shade etc). Have a look at this - it may give you some pointers as to what to do:-
