I moved into my new flat on 28th Sept. I knew it was pp and am being changed over to a credit meter next week. The gas meter is fine but the electricity meter will not show me a reading.

The electricity was working when I moved in and I have put £20 in since then. When I press the blue button, nothing happens.

Any idea what’s wrong? Am I using someone else’s power.

Most likely just a meter fault. The fitters will look at it when they put the new meter in.
Is there no display at all, chrissa ?.

If the screen is blank or showing a message such as ‘error’, ‘call help’ or ‘battery’, there’s probably a fault with the meter. Tell your supplier straight away or you could be left with no energy.

They must send someone out to repair or replace the meter within:

3 hours on a working day (Monday to Friday except bank holidays)
4 hours on a non-working day
The supplier doesn’t have to send someone out if they can fix the problem remotely - but they must do this within the same time.

If you need to top up your meter while you're waiting for your supplier, they should provide you with replacement tokens.

If your supplier doesn’t take appropriate action within the time they must pay you £30 compensation within 10 working days. If they don't pay you on time they have to pay an extra £30 for the delay.

I see. But. I’m between companies. Who should take the blame?
The one who's supplying you now, until you change over.
The one that your currently with, chrissa. Not the one that your moving to.

I got a letter from my new supplier with a top up key and was told to register it by putting it in the meter for 30 seconds. I did this but got no reaction from the meter.
Question Author
I got the letter on Friday.
Try inserting the key again, chrissa.
That's so that the meter will credit your new account. Have you topped up since putting your new card in?
Question Author
Well no, scorpiojo. As it didn’t beep in the first place, I didn’t bother.

I’ll try it again now.

Stand fast.
Question Author
Nope. Nada.
Question Author
Looks like your going to have to phone them, chrissa.
Question Author
Ok. But, who? Old or new? :/
Personally I'd phone the one who provided the key ( first )and tell them that the key isn't working.
When my meter did that, I phoned the supplier. They couldn't get anyone to me for five days or so, but I was reassured that I would continue to get electricity. I'd put money in, but there was no indication on the screen...I had no idea whether it was accepted or not.
I'd probably contact the original supplier first.

Ok. Thanks guys.
