I was told that I need to prune back my potted azalea's as soon as the flowers dye off. But they have already got a lot of new growth coming from around the dead heads. So if I cut them back I will also remove this new growth, which seems a shame, what do I do?

I never touch my potted azalea and it flowers abundantly every year.

Its the same with Rhododendrons, all you need to do, is dead head by hand, pinching out the faded middle flowers, thus leaving two buds each side to flower next year.
Otherwise you can leave it to mother nature, who does a pretty good job.
