I bought my BOSCH in 2002. It is a washer/dryer. It cost £500. It works but the temperature control breaks down. Once 2013 and once in 2015. it cost £100 each time to repair. The control has gone again. Now I wonder should I just scrap the machine and get a new one after all a new one will cost about £500 and be all hi tec and smart and energy efficient and silent or should I just get a repair for £100? A repair now would mean I have spent 60% of the original cost on maintenance. I am quite neutral on this but half inclined to opt for a new one with its energy saving and all that. Any thoughts? Thank you.

A new machine will be much more energy efficient. We recently had the same issue with a dishwasher. Could not believe the drop in our electric readings.

Get a new one and Freecycle that one for someone who hasn't got one at all and will think paying to fix it is a bargain. x

I'd get a new one. Try John Lewis because they give you extra guarantee on top of the manufacturers.

I never get a machine repaired outside of the 12 month warranty. I find (and touching wood) that a washing machine lasts me around 5 years, dryer and dishwasher longer. My view is that I get one bit repaired but the rest is still old and well used and I will have had the inconvenience of waiting for the repairman. When a machine breaks down I can get a replacement to my door, the old one disconnected and removed and the new one fitted within 48 hours, often within 24 hours. Like ubasses I find that the quality, efficiency and energy saving gets better with every machine I buy.
buy a new one and take out extra insurance, i did that and when it went wrong i didn't pay a penny to have it fixed.
Emmie....we got a phone call yesterday about extra insurance. They wanted £140. The machine only cost £250 ish
We have just bought a new Washing Machine from AO.com.
Cannot speak highly enough about them.
Delivered on time, excellent service
They also offer to price match any retailer

I agree with most of the above comments - your current machine has done a good stint, but is at the end of its economic life.

I also agree about John Lewis - they currently have several LG and Samsung machines with a free 5 year extended warranty - much better than paying for insurance.
Yes - Rowan - I bought my Miele from AO at a very good price (plus a Miele cashback) & with a 6 year warranty - they are good people to deal with.

Thank you everybody. Great advice as always. I will get new machine and see if a local charity would like the old one. Certain they will. Ao or JLP? well lets's see. Cheers.
I just put my old machines outside the house. It'll be gone within a couple of hours :-D
Most modern appliances have obsolescence built in.

The days of repairing something until it literally blew up are gone.

Trading in stops you throwing good money after bad, you get a new machine, someone unable to afford a new machine gets a machine, wins all round.
We had a washer/dryer once. Never again.

It stank badly.
andy...obsolescence built in?
Our last AEG machine was 17 years old when replaced (no repairs at all and still working) and the Miele replacement has a 10-year warranty and is engineered to last at least 20 years.
My plumber told me not to use AO, but use Euronics when mine stopped working. £300 including installation and the old one taken away, but obviously you can choose how much you spend.
