Oh ...and is a less expensive washing powder i.e. Tesco, Aldi, Lidl etc going to damage the machine ??
no the washing powder should be fine, however i bought 12 sachets for 16 quid, which seems a lot, from Curry's
pc world on line, and was told to use one a month with no washing in the machine, put on a hot wash, should do the trick.
you can buy descaler at the supermarket - but the engineer i called to fix my machine said it was hard water lime scale and that was shorting out the electrics. So use the one i bought once a month and i;m good to go.
Just use a tablespoon of soda crystals in each wash should keep it scale free.
I use a descaler which I bought from the manufacturer since it is a VERY hard water area round here. I run a sachet of the cleaner through once a month. I have to say, machine comes up v sparkley!!!
My machine has a self clean program, I rune it bi-monthly with 125g of descaling powder, get Sainsburys at £2 a Kilo. If no special program use hottest wash. This is manufacturers recommendation.
I'd not know much about descaling but I use Calgon in most washes.

Thanks everyone
Every now and then I do a hot wash with a bottle of white cleaning vinagar. Very cheap and does the job.
