It it wood, metal or concrete?
Steel bit for metal lintel
Masonry bit for concrete.

Now we know the material in your lintel, I am going to say that you have had concrete advice from -Talbot-

Yes, a masonry bit is needed......... but... Concrete lintels are extremely hard. A normal hammer drill may not even make much of an impression. What's needed is an SDS type electric drill and masonry bit.
