I have a shower tap which works intermittently. Sometimes, when I turn the tap in nothing happens. Then, (with the tap left in the open position) after some minutes or longer, water begins to come out at full pressure. I don't understand how this is happning

Is it a power shower? ie, is there a pump which operates when you turn on the shower? If so it may be that the flow-sensors in the pump are playing up.
You need a plumber to have a look at it. It's probably something simple, but if you're not up to dealing with it, get a plumber in.
Could be an air lock. You don't say if it's a new installation. Has it always been happening. Have you had any other work done on other pipe work.
If the shower head is on a flexible hose, try dropping it low. This might start the flow.
It sounds like a sticking valve in the tap.
When you say " a shower tap' .. what do you mean. It would be pointless trying to diagnose the fault if you dont know what setup you have. A picture would be good.
