I have a door with a small handle and aprox 3 inch non locking lock on my bedroom. The door frame has a small plastic strip running all the way up it and the receiver for the lock on it.

How would I install a key locked lock on it?

I'll try and get pictures up later if that helps.

Pictures may well help. Is it not a case of simply removing the present handle mechanism and replacing with a lock one: maybe needing to remove wood (or whatever) to get a key in, in the right position ?

There isn't a hole in the door for the key just a handle.
Which would why you'd need to make one in the right position.
as OG says, get a mechanism with both handle and lock and install it (might require professional help if you're not a DIYer)

Replace the handle set with a bathroom thumb turn locking handle set. Make sure it will fit the current mortice latch. You can also get them for knob turn door furniture. wont then need a key and the door can be locked from the inside only.

I'd like to be able to lock it from the outside as well. That looks perfect jno. Can you get the piece that fits on the door with an inverted metal thingy to house the lock when it's locked as apposed to lock just sitting in the door frame in soft wood where it can be forced?
It sounds as though you have a lever latch, Hik. You'd need a lever lock set. You'd need to dig out more of the door to fit one though. Width will be Ok, but lock sets are longer. You would also have to drill through the door for the key.

Or ... you may be able to find a knob set where the key fits into the middle of the knob. This type may possibly work with the latch you have already. Since the key merely prevents the knob from turning, it acts as a lock, but without a separate snib (bit that sticks out to lock it.)

I'm guessing the "Inverted metal thingy" you describe is the keep. The keep fits in the door frame. The bolt in the lock fits into the keep, when the key is turned to the locking position.
If you think that someone can easily force the lock then you should be assessing whether the door/frame is man enough to house the lock.
You can fit all the locks you want, but if someone comes prepared, there is no keeping them out.
The particular lock shown in the link would be fairly easy to open without a key... I would just hammer a chisel into the edge of the frame/architrave to create a gap in front of the lock. Then using a hacksaw blade just cut through the lock bolt .... Have done it many times. The only way to deter this form of entry is to fit a lock with hardened steel rollers in the bolt to resist sawing. Even then I can still get past them, but like I said .. "If you come prepared".

It isn't normal practice to fit a 5 lever sash lock with hardened rollers and a steel keep box on an internal door, although I have done it when creating a sanctuary (for witness protection). What do you actually want to do ?

^^^^ That type has its own latch. You won't need your existing one. Should be a direct replacement.
^^^ I was talking to myself there. Didn't see Homer sneak in ;o)
That's the first sign .... talking to yourself .... 8-)
