Out of interest, living in a smoke control area, if using a chimney, how much smoke/smell would a chimney usually make and could it be that a lot of smoke and a burning smell could be produced even using authorised fuels?

Maybe showing my age :)

I doubt that 'authorised' fuels would produce much (if any) smoke.
And the smells I get whilst walking past barges along the canal are
really nice, not unpleasant.
If the smoke is from a 'DEFRA APPROVED' woodburning stove, very little, but this of course will also depend on wind direction etc and the quality of wood being burnt.
I love the smell of oak burning, it's wonderful.
