An Alternative To Glass Table Cover

I have just managed to break a heavy glass protective cover for an old Irish oak kitchen table (27'x54').
Can anyone suggest an alternative to clear glass that would leave the wood visible? It does not have to be heatproof.
Thanks a lot. I hope someone can help.

I would have a look online, ilovebrie. Maybe a DIY or craft store might have some if you want to buy from a shop.

Perspex? Might get scratched easier than glass would though.
Clear Perspex you could probably get it made to measure from a specialist.
You can get toughened glass which might solve the issue.
I too would be wary of scratches in plastic alternatives.
You didn't say how the original broke.

Thanks, 2tsp. This is the second breakage this year. I'll try for Perspex. But where? A builder's yard or somewhere similar?
Google plastics firms. They used to have ads in the back of the Sunday papers many years back.

The first one shattered into hundreds of little pieces as I was lifting it, just like a windscreen would.
The second cracked into three pieces when I moved it. Neither of them had been ill-treated.
Expensive, though!
Wow.
Maybe you are stronger than you look ;-)
Perhaps a PROPER glazier firm could help you here. hey would cut it to the exact size for you.

The first breakage was really scary and took forever to gather up. I was very lucky not to be hit in the face with flying glass.
Could I ask 2sp what thickness I should look for- and thanks for the link.

Everyone is just so helpful I know a glazier place about 10 miles away (the other two were supplied by glaziers)!
I don't really know what thickness you would need to be honest. How thick is the glass? Maybe just go for the same?

(Sorry, I'm very vague!)
