My understanding of the situation is that the concept of deeds as they used to be no longer applies in law. It used to be the deeds was the cornerstone of ownership, but that now what matters is what is held by the Land Registry. Is this accurate?

Many thanks,

Sorry, I wasn't clear; I mean as applies to property and property ownership, leasehold and freehold.
I understand that it's no longer vital to hold paper deeds, as everything should be recorded at the Land Registry.
Its still a deed, just its now stored electronically. Some houses or land which hasn't been sold for years will still only have a paper deed and sometimes the land registry record has an error in it but by and large that is the record now.
There are still properties that have not been registered at the Land Registry (because they haven't been sold for many years) but the vast majority are registered and this does make the paper deeds irrelevant. As soon as these properties change hands registration will automatically take place.

When my house was registered some years after I bought it the mortgage company sent me my deeds as they no longer needed them.
