Mr Tilly is in a bit of a paddy because he's just had the lawnmower serviced and has tried to use it and it won't work.

It's a petrol one and he has been trying to get it going for the last twenty minutes.
He's always had trouble with this one, having to yank the rope thing over and over. Should a petrol mower start on the first/second go?
Can you get petrol mowers with a different sort of start mechanism?

A common problem with people using 2-stroke petrol mowers is that people try to run them on the 4-stroke fuel that you buy at filling stations without adding the necessary 2-stroke oil to it. Has Mr T forgotten the oil (or is it a 4-stroke mower anyway)? Another common problem is stale fuel. If the mower has fuel in it that's more than a few months old, it needs to be...

Late tot he thread... but your hubbies constantly pushing the 'red squeezy thing' he probably also has the "choke" on, which is appropriate for the first start of the day, but beyond that he's getting raw fuel into the compression chamber... have him simply open the throttle while pulling the starter rope... it'll take several pulls. The choke should also be in the off position. It'll start once the cylinder (compression chamber) is cleared out and the tip of the spark plug has dried. Luck!

Oh Tilly2, I didn't know this thread had been on yesterday, anyway It made me laugh as we have had our petrol lawnmower for the past 15 years, we have been having this problem lately trying to get the thing started he has so many pulls then it's my turn, honestly the neighbours must see us and get a laugh, what we now do is have a spare spark plug heat it first, put it in and it usually goes after a couple of pulls, it is a great lawnmower when it gets going too.

Katburd, we don't have a spark plug undoing mechanism. You are obviously more tooled up than us. That sounds like a good idea too.

It's only handy if you have someone who knows what to do with it, katburd. Otherwise, it's another piece of metal cluttering up the garage. Guess which would apply in the Tilly household.
