10 yrs ago i planted a stick with a label on it saying montana clematis without much hope, it was reduced to 59p in garden centre. and waited. oh me of little faith, it now grows 30ft along the back wall is 8ft high, and about 5ft thick and is covered in beautiful flowers. everyone laughed at my little stick they are not laughing now. I don't know about great oaks from acorns but great clematis from little twigs grow. anyone got one like it ?

Thanks Boxy - may have a go at taking cuttings as Clematis plants are quite expensive to buy. x
hey boxtops!.........not been here in a while, great to see you!.......
A neighbour two doors down has a montana Elizabeth, it covers their garden fence and has grown into a couple of birch trees. Looking out of my bedroom window I can see masses of pink flowers they are simply glorious!
Yes as Boxtops' link says you can take them about now, as everything is a bit late this year anyway. Don't forget to take quite a few as they don't all 'take' Good luck :0) -rosy
Many years ago I was given a small Montana by an elderly gardener of Lord Methuen at Corsham, he said it will like to face the sun, but have it's feet in the shade, that's what I did, and it now covers the front of a house in the Cotswolds - where I no longer live.
You must not allow it to get onto the roof tiles though, as it will burrow its way underneath them, re-emerging higher up and cause you problems.
One other little tip to note with planting out Clematis is to cover the base with stones or broken concrete slab portions to keep the roots cool, & of course water regularly.
