Was lethal. It plugged in to the light socket and got super hot on the outside. In fact I have found a photo of one very like it:

I had to pull the side flaps down and turn the bread to toast the other side. All guesswork and far harder than toasting bread with a toasting fork in front of the fire or using the grill.

Which appliance has made your life harder?

My first pressure cooker...scared the living daylights out of me !!
Mrs Z just bought a new iron. It's a Bosch, so should be good but the water reservoir emptys too damn fast, the spray button doesn't spray so much as doing an imitation of a water cannon and the thing is the size of a small family car so rubbish for ironing anything with any detail, like a pocket on a shirt. Grrrr.

A selection of flat irons heating on the grate would be better, Zacs :)

Pressure cookers! The very old ones with the bolt down lids were frightening
I'd love to find one like that, hc4361, I like bread toasted on one side only
Psybbo - has your toaster got a bagel setting?
Sher, I don't know, I think it's just toast or defrost
Could you not put two pieces of bread in one slot?
I'll try that Sher, I had thought of doing that but never actually did it but I used to use one of those old toasters with really thick bread and loved it. Apologies hc4361
I bought an electric egg boiler. That was more hassle than it was worth.
Electric rice cooker....waste of time especially for just one person! lol

We are tempted by gadgets - it's interesting to watch the customers in the Apple stores.

Please, Mr Dyson or anybody - invent a silent vacuum cleaner ASAP. Mine is just too, too loud.
I have a Hetty hoover and it's very quiet. Dyson sounds like an aeroplane.
Question Author
Noooooo - I refuse to believe Hetty is quiet, I've heard a few Henry's and they sound like a bag of nails in a grinder.

Mine is a Hoover
Buying a chip fryer as it means having to peel potatoes rather than being able to chuck a bag of chips in the oven. I hate peeling potatoes, I have an irrational phobia of potato eyes!
Deep fat fryers are more trouble than they're worth. All that spitting fat and nasty dribbles. They look evil.
Question Author
But they do make lovely, proper chips
Do they? I can't remember the last time I ate a home-fried chip. I do remember all the mess, though.
Question Author
You'll have to come round to mine, Cloverjo, and relive the good old days.

Thankfully I have a dishwasher :)
Great! Thank you.
You can't put the walls in a dishwasher, though. :))

My kitchen is completely tiled - and I have a vacuum window cleaner thing that will soon sort greasy splashes out :)
