I have 2 rooms with fires and need to get the chimneys swept to start using them, they have not been swept for about 8 yrs.

What should I expect to pay and are there any methods that are better / cleaner than others, (but might cost more).

Thanks for the help folks

Very many years back my father used to do this work, the job can be very dusty / dirty, the cost then was £££££ Now, I would think it would be around £30 / £50, P/Chimney, there is no other method that can give you the best results, IF there has been a Nest within the chimney, A rod with a large Screw end has to be used to remove, this will be dropped to the Fire Grate, this task can take as long as it takes, & as good as the sweeper Him / her self, the job can be done your self, you can hire the rods, the cover for the front of the fireplace, If you do decide to do the job yourself, make sure ALL AREAS are COVERED BY OLD SHEETS, by not doing this, you will end up getting the whole lot cleaned. Good Luck.
A chimney sweep is definitely the way to go. I got mine done last year £35 per chimney and the guy I got used immaculately white sheets (whiter than some I put on the beds!) My neighbour thought it was too expensive so decided to clean his own. Needless to say he made a pig's ear of it, had to redecorate his sitting room and it cost £60 to have his curtains dry cleaned!
the last time i used one was over 10 years ago, and it was around 40 quid.
Paid £35 to have mine swept last year, had to get a new chap as the old one had packed it in, I WON'T be calling him again!
get the phone book or local paper and ring all the sweeps you can find and ask what they charge. There may also be a local advertising mag with small-ads from sweeps.
£35 is about right.Mine only charged that even though he knew there was a nest; he doesn't charge extra for nests. One bloke I had said he'd charge an extra fifty if there was a nest; he still got the job because I knew there wasn't one, but I did think that was a cheek!

Thank you all

I rang got a quote £40 per chimney or £75 for the 2 in the same house, and if there is a nest and it takes over an hr they will charge pro rata (ie 1 chimney @ £40 per hr). I phoned a few friends and got a recommendation too.
