I would like to add a 240 light at a distance from my Chamberlain ML850-GB garage door opener, and to go on/off with it.
While I know I could take a connection from the 24v side of it, I would rather do this, as fed up using these supposedly rough service bulbs which do not seem to last.
does anyone know where to connect to ?

The 24v feed from the door could operate a 24v relay which would switch a 230v supply to your light...hope this helps

Thanks for that Bright Spark, Thought about that previously but is a 24v relay kind of special controlling 240v light. Thought about taken conn. from 240 into transformer if that is the control side, and putting isolated to light adjacent.
Not sure what you mean by "kind of special"

A relay is exactly what you need, use the 24v into the relay to switch a 230V feed to the light.

The 230V into the transformer will almost certainly be a fixed live and not switched in anyway. (though you could use this for the 230V feed to the relay)

This is the sort of thing you need

Although the fact you are asking the question indicates you probably shouldn't attempt to do this yourself.

Thanks for reply Chuckfickens and your concern. Will Prob. do the 24v relay, via Maplin, but investigate if 240v is the controlled side first
