Regretting removal of Lawson cypresses on two sides of back garden (both of which have 6ft fences in place).
Any suggestions for tall shrubs which won't spread too far into garden space?

grow climbers up the fences rather than planting a collection of shrubs in front... jasmines, roses, campsis, solanums, passionflowers, and maybe something edible like a kiwi fruit with clematis to scramble between add shriubs that while not climbers can be trained like pyracantha, winter jasmine and chaenomeles for all year changes and colour
What about a couple of small trees eg Acer, Hornbeam interspersed with some faster growing and colourful Cclematis Montana to cover the fence?

Garraya Elliptica - think I have spelt it right ,its a lovely shrub/tree and the silver catkins are great in flower arrangements.

Thanks, folks - one or two I had already considered, but your suggestions are a great help.
