I have bought a bottle of special liquid which is supposed to make my towels soft and fluffy if washed in it. However it doesn't appear to work, the towels are hardly any different after washing. How do hotels, etc., manage to get their towels soft and fluffy, considering how often they have to be washed?

tumble dry with those little balls that bash them about a bit
I agree with tumble drying but if you don't have one, use fabric conditioner (the cheap ones are not much good ) then if it's a nice breezy day, hang them outside as they seem softer than if you dry them indoors.
The secret is just that - tumble dry!! - I put mine outside first to get that lovely fresh smell and then finish off in the dryer, lovely.
Remember that rough towels have their positive side...they help get rid of that outer layer of dead skin!
I don't have a drier and no where to dry washing outside one other key is rinsing really really well as detergent buildup is one of the things that makes them hard

I always thought fabric conditioner was hydrophobic and made towels less absorbent.

Tumble drying to finish is the best solution and if you don't have a tumbler try to dry outside on a windy day.

I rub butter into mine. ( not really!!)
Give the maid a good talking to.
When you wash towels there is a build up of soap residue and one way of keeping your towels soft & fluffy is to wash occasionally without any soap and certainly no softener. You will be amazed how much soap lather there is in the rinse.
As much as I hate to use the tumble dryer I find it is the best way to get my towels thick, soft and fluffy
