As far as I know there is a particular fungus in the soil of an orchid which is essential for it to survive so kill it by repotting.

Thanks for that - I will have to buy the special Orchid compost then
an orchid requires a lot of air and light around the roots so a JI no 1 will not be suitable. Use a specialist orchid compost. I have not heard of a particular fungus required in the soil, I am not sure that is a fact.

There is a specialist orchid compost though

I will have to buy some of that - seems a shame as I only have one little orchid
It was a present and it would be rude to let it die

Sorry - thanks for that hawkwalk
if it is a moth orchid it would be better re-potted in bark chippings remember to get a see through pot as the 'roots' are actually capable of photosynthesis as they have chorophyll try to leave as many as possible exposed to light

I don't know what kind of orchid it is
It's very pretty with pale pink outer petals and very dark towards the centre
