Unpaid debt

I moved into my house in January this year and rent it through a letting agency. This week I've had two letters chasing debt on behalf of British Gas - 2 different amounts, 2 different references so I presume one is for gas and one is for electricity, they are both for the same period, which was 2 months before I moved in.
Anyway, what I want to know is should I just forward them onto my agency and let them deal with it (not really sure I trust them to follow it up as they're quite slack) or should I just ring the company myself and inform them the debt is from the previous tenant? I'm a bit loathe to do this on my own time but if it means it gets sorted quicker then I will.

Surely the rental agency took readings for the outgoing tenant which you have proof of therefore they should chase it up.

Thank you, I contacted the litigation agency and they just asked for the date I moved in and that was that, so hopefully no more letters.
