I want to lay laminate flooring in my hall it's 12feet long and 4feet wide is it best to lay it long ways or across the short ways

I'd lay it long ways.
Same as my hall fishing - mine is laid longways.

If you lay it across ... when you look down it from one inside the house, it will look as though it has loads of joints crossing the floor. Whereas if you lay it longways , it will be more pleasing to the eye ... with less joints visible.

Well as pleasing as laminate can look ...!

Another issue is the joints across the hall will be more likely to get damaged as shoes scuff across them ... 'lay it longways'
Longways will also give you less waste
Lengthwise will have the visual effect of lengthening and narrowing the hall whereas across has the opposite effect.
I hate laminate, my dogs cant stay upright on the horrible stuff, its like a skating rink!!
ours is longways, hall is about 15ft long, for pretty much the reasons alavahalf gives.
We took our laminate up because of our dogs, didn't want another big vets bill after one hurt herself slipping on the damned stuff.
