Undercoat your MDF first, twice if you can, the first coat being watered down a bit so the wood soaks up the paint.

After you have done that, paint it with an oil based paint.

Thank you .
You're welcome :)
Tsk tsk not undercoat.
First coat with a thinned down coat of acrylic primer. The mdf will then fur up , sand it down and then give another coat of acrylic primer. The mdf is then ready to undercoat and then glosss or paint with eggshell paint.
If you undercoat straight offf the surface can get very rough when it furs up.

DID THIS HELP ?
Eggshell paint will not stand the heat.

My Dad is a painter and decorator, I called hm to answer your question and he said that's how he does it and hasn't had any complaints.
Ronseal make a one coat paint suitable for melamine and MDF in 14 different colours in a satin finish.
i would use paint.
Speed and efficiency. I would paint twice with matt finish emulsion, first coat thinned to act as a seal. 2nd coat stirred and from the tin. Use 00 sandpaper between coat, to get a real fine finish. Then, when it is the colour you wish to end with, apply your top coat. MDF tends to soak like a blotter, the first couple of coats. Allow to thoroughly dry between each coat you apply.
