I guess, if it hasn't perished yet. But it's useful life must be shorter.
The 'official' line (from retailers such as CarpetRight) is that you shouldn't re-use underlay:
https://www.carpetright.co.uk/info-centre/frequently-asked-questions/already-underlay-buy-new-underlay/

However I'd be happy to do so - if I actually had any underlay in the first place! I prefer to stick with the old DIY trick of using lots of old newspapers ;-)
Yes, I am on my third carpet on the same underlay.

it was a very good underlay, and it seems a shame to throw it away.
@ chris, lol, yes, i'm sure the offical rule from carpet right is to buy new carpets every year too. never throw newspaper away, it's got so many uses, that's what im going to put under my wooden floor
That'll give the rats something to read.
Your moving house soon aren't you, tandh. I'd reuse the underlay ( especially if it's in good nick ) if I were you.

lol @ old geezer.
@ tony yes i am, but i don't want rip my buyers off.... i really belive in karma
Your buyers will probably want to change the carpet without a couple of years so need to change the underlay.
You not ripping them off if the underlay is in good condition though, tandh.

i was thinking that too hc, i think the main thing i need to know is if it will last a few years, and buy the answers i think it will
Question Author
thank you, plus i think knowing i can reuse it will help me in negotiating a price for the purchase and fitting.
To be fair, when I buy a house the underlay is not a consideration. If a house has obviously been primed for sale - new carpets and freshly decorated - I assume the carpets are cheap and 'will do, for now'. If the carpets are old it would not put me off buying the property.
You are worrying too much about little things.
Question Author
lol! yeah maybe you are right. The carpet is bad though, it's got a iron burn (don't ask) in it and plaster stains all over
Your choice. It very much depends on how much you're selling the house for.

Good luck with it all, anyway. Stressful times.

lol just joking, i'm hoping for around 300. i really think it will make the difference. I've finished another bedroom completely and it looks so nice all clean and white with sand coloured carpets (i didn't replace them) i think if they that then see the master with disgusting carpets it will be a real turn off
Never mind new carpets. Only solid oak floors will do.
Bedroom carpet can definitely be on the cheaper end - it doesn't get the wear (except in your house). Yep, change the carpet.
Question Author
lol! i have found one that will be about £70, but the cost will be getting someone to fit it...>
