Planted the above today and also put in a pergola for it to climb on.

Will it be sufficient to apply some eco-mulch to keep the roots cool or should I surround the base with pebbles?

pebbles ..they do not like their feet in sun !!

I know, Minty. Will mulch not suffice?
birds etc will rootle it oot !!

From the Royal Horticultural Society's website:
"Plant in a sheltered position in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles at the base. Plant with the crown 5-8cm (2-3in) deep to encourage new shoots to grow from below ground level"
